Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, and pollen is covering everything. Spring is officially here! As the weather warms up, it’s a great time to open the windows, air out the house, and declutter all the things that have been encroaching on your space all winter. However, spring cleaning can be a daunting task! Don’t let the magnitude of the job dampen your spring spirit! Check out these simple steps to help you zip through spring cleaning, declutter your home, and get on with enjoying the Spring and Summer!
-) Clean out the fridge and freezer. Even food in the freezer has an optimal life span. If you aren’t going to eat it…toss it! The best cleaner for your fridge and freezer is a mixture of salt and soda water. This keeps chemicals out of your home and away from your food. You can find a simple (and cheap!) recipe here.
-) Clean out your storage spaces. The weather is getting nicer and the days are getting longer….why not set up a yard sale? Go searching for items that you do not use anymore and have a yard sale to generate clutter into cash! Or, if you’d prefer not to have a yard sale in your yard, try posting items on free local sites such as Offer Up or Let Go. If you have items that you cannot or do not want to sell, try donating them to a local charity. Added perk? You can get a tax write off in some cases for these donations.
-) Clean carpets and rugs. Over the winter, your carpets have likely gotten nasty! From tracked in dirty to kids dropping food to pets tracking in from outside….you want to clean those carpets! Carpet cleaning companies often have discounts in the Spring for carpet and tile cleaning! Ask about discounts or, if you are feeling brave and have the time, look into renting a carpet cleaning machine and doing it yourself. For area rugs, ask if the carpet cleaners can clean these too. If they cannot, try a carpet cleaning powder and vacuum the excess to freshen your space and remove dirt and stains.
-) Power wash the house. You can look into a service for this, or make a weekend project out of it! Power washing your home helps keep your house looking fresh and can even help prevent bug infestations. For a big impact, power wash the walk way and drive way as well.
-) Change your air filters. Did you know that for an average suburban home without pets it is recommended that you change your air filter every 90 days? If you have pets (all that hair gets caught in the filters) or during high pollen times (hello, Spring!), you may want to change your filters more often to keep your HVAC functioning optimally. You don’t want your HVAC system to die on you in the middle of Summer.
-) Clean your screens and windows. Grab a bucket of water and cleaner and hook up the hose. It is easiest to clean your window frames and screens before you power wash. Try using an old piece of carpet to clean the screens without tearing them. Use a rag and your cleaning bucket to clean window sills and frames. Pollen, dust, and dirt like to build up in window sills which attracts bugs.
