According to the most recent NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) data, in 2010 U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,331,500 fires. These fires resulted in 3,120 civilian fire fatalities, 17,720 civilian fire injuries and an estimated $15,478,000,000 in direct property loss. In residential fires, fire extinguishers successfully put out 80% of fires. To highlight the effectiveness of extinguishers in the early stage fire fighting, a 2002 UK study performed by FETA (Fire Extinguishing Trades Association) and IFEDA (Independent Fire Engineering and Distributors Association)5 reviewed over 2100 fire incidents and found that in 80% of the cases a portable fire extinguisher successfully extinguished the fire and in 75% of those cases, the fire department was not required to attend.

Most home owners know the importance of having smoke alarms and fire extinguishers in their homes. However, approximately 25% of homes do not have a fire extinguisher available for emergencies.

Last week Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Company Inc. issued a recall for approximately 40 million fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and this year under multiple brand names.  According to the recall notice “The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”  The recalled models were sold at Menards, Montgomery Ward, Sears, The Home Depot, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores nationwide, and online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other online retailers for between $12 and $50 and for about $200 for model XL 5MR.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notice can be viewed by clicking on this link https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2017/kidde-recalls-fire-extinguishers-with-plastic-handles-due-to-failure-to-discharge-and

Below is a list of the 134 models involved in the recall. The models under recall have plastic handles or are push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers.  If you currently have equipment involved in the recall, you may contact Kidde to request a free replacement and for instructions on returning the recalled one. You can reach Kidde at 855-271-0773 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. eastern time Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Or go to kidde.com and click on “Product Safety Recall.”

Check the fire extinguisher that you have in your home to make sure that the model you have isn’t one that is in recall.  If you have one of the recalled models, this may also allow you to return them to Kidde for a replacement.
