The summer months are some of the highest traffic times of the year. Kids are out of school, families are on vacation and road trips are in session. However, did you know that the summer months are also some of the highest times of year for auto accidents?
In a recent study, it was estimated that nine (9!) people lose their lives EVERY DAY due to an accident related to distracted driving and it is estimated that 1 in 5 auto accidents involving injury or property damage are a result of distracted driving. Texting, talking on the phone, wrangling children or pets in the back seats….all distract drivers from focusing on the road. Accidents can happen in a blink. Did you know that if you are traveling at 55 mph, in the time that it takes you to read or write an average text, you will have traveled approximately the length of a football field. Crazy, huh?
Here are a few tips for safer driving this summer (and year round!):
1-) Make sure that the kiddos are safely buckled into their car seats or seats (depending on regulations for their age and size in your area). If you’ve got the furry members of your family in the car too, make sure that they are seated in the back or are in a space clear of gearshifts, the driver’s seat (yes, that means Fido shouldn’t be riding in your lap. Sorry, Fido.).
2-) Never drive under the influence. There are simply too many options to get home. Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or any other substance. Try Uber for a ride home (you’ll even get you a discount if you use promo code ‘Uberbraunagency’), ask a friend for a ride, have a DD before the party starts….but do not drive under the influence. It’s simply not worth it.
3-) Do not text and drive. Whatever the message is, it can wait. Texting is one of the leading distractions that is reported as the cause of auto accidents. If you have to return a message, use a hands-free calling device and call the person to discuss instead of texting them back. Or, simply wit until you are no longer driving.
4-) Be aware of and obey traffic laws. Go the speed limit and remember to turn your low lights on when you’re driving if your auto doesn’t have automatic low-runners. Even on sunny days, driving with your low lights on makes you more visible to other drivers. Remember to always wear your seat belt.
